Magical Musicals

Netflix Instant View is evil.  While there isn’t a plethora of great movies, but if you search long enough you can find some good ones and usually they are in the documentary section.  I found one called Hollywood Singing and Dancing: A Musical History, which takes one through the history of the musical.

I love musicals because it involved singing and sometimes dancing.  I grew up on these movies.  When my mother bought me the Wizard of Oz as a kid I watched it 8 times in a row.   To this day, if I’m sick or feeling crappy I will pop the Sound of Music in and it never fails to cheer me up.   As a kid I danced around my living room wearing a poodle skirt my mother made me reenacting scenes from Grease.

My all time favorites (besides the ones above) are Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, um hello dudes who look like dudes doing piorettes with axes, HELLO that’s awesome; not to mention the dancing on the log roller.  Then there is Singing in the Rain…while other kids my age had crushes on Johnny Depp or those guys from 90210 I was dreaming of dance sequences and romance with Gene Kelly.  It was a sad day in our house when my mother broke the news that Kelly was older than my grandfather.

Oh who the fuck am I kidding, I don’t really have a favorite musical.  As I’m watching this history of musicals I’m singing along to practically all of the freaking songs.  The cats have hidden themselves because I can’t sing. Dance yes, sing not even remotely.

Kristian hides when I watch musicals, because he doesn’t like to hear the CAST MEMBERS singing. :p Also, I think he thinks it will make his penis shrivel up and die. When I watch Glee, he retreats to as far away in the house as he can get.
